I imagine that he really cares about her, but if he revolved around her 24/7 like a puppy, she would've began to lose interest (whether she likes it or not). Either he's just the way he is (probably a natural with girls, or soon to be), or he's probably made the mistake of giving too much attention to a girl he's really liked before and that girl might've broke his heart.

Guys use logic, rather than emotion like girls do. Which is why some guys could look at a hot girl, and within 3 secs, want to sleep with her (without even knowing her). Girls are the same way... just not with looks. If a guy with a sweet charming personality, that holds his own ground, makes you laugh all the time, someone your girlfriends talk about, cares about you and is willing to protect you, and has a hot job making a lot of money... you'd probably jump right in his arms and say "Take me..."
